Ear Still Blocked Days After a Flight? What to Do
If your ear stays blocked for days after landing, it may be fluid behind the eardrum rather than simple pressure. Here is what to try and when to get checked.
Most pressure problems after flying settle within a day or two. If one ear stays blocked for several days, the cause is often fluid or mucus behind the eardrum, a result of the Eustachian tube still not opening properly after a cold, allergy or sinus problem.
Why It May Linger
A recent cold or hay fever makes the lining of the nose and the Eustachian tube swollen. After a flight, fluid can collect in the middle ear and stay there until the tube opens again. The ear feels full, hearing is dull, and you may hear your own voice louder than usual. Pain is often mild.
Things You Can Try
Steam inhalation, a saline nose rinse, regular swallowing or chewing and gentle Valsalva can help. Avoid cotton buds and do not put oil, drops or objects in the ear unless a doctor advises it. Avoid flying again until the ears feel normal, because a second flight can make things worse.
When You Should Be Checked
See a doctor if symptoms last longer than a few days, if pain increases, if there is fever, discharge, dizziness or hearing loss, or if you need to fly again soon. The doctor can ask about symptoms, look at your ear on camera if you have an otoscope, or arrange an ENT visit for an examination and a hearing test.
Treatment
Depending on the cause, treatment may include nasal steroid sprays, decongestants for a short time, treatment of an allergy or sinus infection, and in some cases antibiotics if there is an infection. A doctor decides what is suitable. Persistent fluid may need a specialist.
