Gardasil HPV Vaccine in Turkey: What Travellers and Expats Should Know
Thinking about the Gardasil HPV vaccine in Turkey? Here is what it protects against, how many doses you need, and how to arrange it.
Gardasil 9 is a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus that can cause genital warts and several cancers, including cervical cancer. It protects against nine HPV types and is one of the most widely used vaccines in the world.
Who Is It for
Vaccination is recommended from about age 11 or 12, and can start from age 9. It works best when given before any exposure to the virus, which is why it is aimed at young people. Adults who were not vaccinated earlier may choose it after discussing their risk with a doctor, although the benefit is smaller for older adults. It is not given during pregnancy.
Number of Doses
Recommendations differ between countries. CDC guidance in the United States uses two doses six to twelve months apart for those who start before age 15, and three doses over six months for those who start at 15 or older or who have a weakened immune system. The NHS in the UK currently offers a different schedule. Your age at the first dose and your own country’s guidance decide the plan, so bring your vaccination record.
Side Effects
Most people have a sore arm, redness or swelling at the injection site, and some feel tired or have a headache for a day or two. Serious allergic reactions are very rare. Tell the person giving the vaccine if you have had a reaction to a vaccine or to yeast before.
Arranging It in Turkey
The vaccine is given in person by a nurse or doctor. Availability, brand and price depend on the pharmacy or clinic, so message us on WhatsApp and we will check what is available and how to book. If you are travelling, ask about the timing of the second and third doses so that you can complete the course at home or on a return visit. Girls and boys, women and men can all be vaccinated.
