How to See a Doctor in Istanbul as a Tourist: Guide & Tips
Feeling unwell in Istanbul? Eight practical tips for getting English-speaking medical help quickly, from video visits to pharmacies and emergencies.
Falling ill during a trip to Istanbul is more common than most visitors expect, especially after long days of walking, street food and crowded transport. The good news is that you can usually get help the same day, and you do not have to struggle with a language barrier.
1. Decide How Urgent It Is
For chest pain, difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness or a serious injury, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. For everyday problems such as tummy bugs, urinary infections, colds, ear pain, skin rashes or sunburn, a doctor consultation is usually enough.
2. Talk to an English-Speaking Doctor by Video
A video consultation with Dr. Elif Yasbala, who speaks English, German and Turkish, works from your hotel room, villa or apartment anywhere in Istanbul, including Sultanahmet, Taksim, Galata, Kadikoy, Besiktas and Nisantasi. The on-demand doctor is available 24/7, so you do not have to wait for opening hours.
3. Know Your in-Person Options
Private clinics and hospital outpatient departments in tourist areas often see patients without an appointment, but waiting times, fees and English-speaking staff vary. A video visit is often the faster first step.
4. Ask About a Hotel Visit
In selected areas a doctor can visit you at your hotel or villa. Message us on WhatsApp with your location to check availability.
5. Get Your Prescription
If medication is needed, the doctor sends an e-prescription by WhatsApp or email. Show it on your phone or print it, then collect your medicine from any pharmacy (eczane). Out of hours, look for the on-duty pharmacy (nobetci eczane).
6. Prepare Your Details
Have your passport details, travel insurance policy, a list of your regular medicines and any allergies ready. A photo of your medicine packaging helps.
7. Use Your Travel Insurance
If you are insured, message us on WhatsApp before your visit so we can guide you. Keep the invoice and prescription for your claim.
8. Know What Cannot Be Done Online
Controlled substances such as strong painkillers, ADHD medication and benzodiazepines cannot be prescribed online, and online visits are not for life-threatening conditions.
A Short History of Istanbul
Istanbul began as the Greek colony of Byzantion, was refounded by the Roman emperor Constantine as Constantinople in 330 AD and became the capital of the Byzantine Empire and, from 1453 under Mehmed II, of the Ottoman Empire. The Hagia Sophia from the 6th century, the Blue Mosque from the early 17th century and Topkapi Palace still dominate the skyline of the old peninsula.
Social Life and Nightlife in Istanbul
Life in Istanbul moves across two continents. Ferries cross the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia, Karakoy, Galata and Moda fill with cafes, and friends and families meet on the waterfront in the evening. Tea, simit and street food are part of everyday life. Beyoglu, Karakoy and Kadikoy are the main areas for bars, rooftop terraces, live music and late restaurants, with traditional meyhane taverns serving mezes and raki. Late nights, heavy food and alcohol sometimes cause stomach upsets, so choose busy places and drink water.
